Amid Zika fears, FDA calls halt to blood donations in 2 FL counties

MIAMI (WFOR/CNN) - The FDA has asked blood banks in Miami-Dade and Broward counties to stop collecting donations immediately because they've been asked to test all donations for the Zika virus.
The decision comes amid an investigation into a possible Zika outbreak.
A medical professor says the FDA's request is unique.
"We have a whole mechanism where blood can be brought in from nearby areas where there's not considered to be any risks at all, and even though the risk here is absolutely minimum, in an abundance of caution, things are being done this way," said Dr. Aileen Marty of the FIU School of Medicine.
"I recall I have not seen a stop ban on the use of blood from local people before in south Florida, but that's in recent history," she added.
It's not clear if local hospitals will be impacted by the FDA's request.
Miami-Dade and Broward counties have the most confirmed Zika patients in the state.
Zika is linked to a serious birth defect that can lead to babies being born with abnormally small heads
